--------It has been a while since I have had a chance to sit down and review something. In the time since I last wrote a column here at The Peoples Comics I have moved, flown to Los Angeles, Loaded a truck full of furniture, unloaded that truck, reloaded a larger truck, drove across the country, moved my mom into her new place, emptied out my storage unit, crammed all that shit into my new place and began setting up my new studio. Of course I am still not done however it is worth all the work to have this sweet new pad to dwell in with my family. Even now as I try to write this column I get up every 12 seconds to put something away. Watcha gonna do? I am one of those guys who has a tough time throwing stuff away and has too much crap. So lets get started on these movie reviews. Over the last couple weeks I have seen two movies that I was really looking forward to. Book of Eli and Legion. --------Book of Eli. The preview of this movie had me thinking I was about to watch the most badass post apocalyptic movie since The Road Warrior. When I was watching The Road I kept thinking about how much more awesome Book of Eli was going to be. I love a big Hollywood action movie and this was promising to be such. I was calling it Book of Ass Kicking. But it was not Book of Ass Kicking. There were about four big fight scenes in this movie and they were simply OK. Most of the movie was spent walking and talking. Due to all the packing, moving and driving of the last couple weeks I was not able to see this movie on opening weekend. So I had already heard that the movie was not the same movie that the preview was promising. But I still gave it a shot. I love a good post apocalyptic movie and will always give them a chance. --------I am now downgrading this movie from Book of Ass Kicking to Book of Yawn. If you want to watch a movie about a wandering hero in a post apocalyptic wasteland kicking ass up and down the desert, don’t bother with this one. However if you want to watch a movie that contains people talking about how awesome The Bible is, this is your movie. Now I am not going to say it is a terrible movie, it just isn’t what I was expecting. --------Next up is Legion, another post apocalyptic movie of another sort of apocalypse. Actually I guess I would have to rate this one as apocalyptic since it actually takes place during the apocalypse. This one was of course a different sort of apocalypse. This was the good old-fashioned wrath of God sort of apocalypse. Now this movie certainly delivers in the action department. No I am afraid the flaws of this movie were of another sort. While watching this movie I felt like I had seen every scene in another movie. For the most part this movie was a knockoff of Terminator. Legion also borrowed heavily from every zombie movie I have ever seen that had a group of humans holed up in a building defending against hordes of monsters. There was even a scene in this movie that reminded me of Interview With a Vampire. You know the scene where Brad Pitt must “regrettably decline” making out with Antonio Banderas. --------I guess the angels are similar to Anne Rice’s Vampires in their genderless ness. Gabriel and Michael seemed like old lovers on different sides of a dispute. Sure they had to fight, however they would have preferred to rub each other’s wings and look into each other’s, eyes saying meaningful things. --------Now don’t get me wrong. The visuals were really cool in this movie. The angels were depicted as total ass kickers. The story was entertaining. It was the lack of originality that killed it for me. Perhaps killed it for me is too harsh. Lets look at the positive for a moment. I cannot recall ever seeing an armored angel look so awesome. Michael’s Sword and Gabriel’s Mace were awesome weaponry. The big fight between the two was pretty cool. There were some funny one-liners. I would say the acting was all around well done. It was fun to see Charles S Dutton again. Dennis ”The Lesser” Quaid wasn’t bad either. I am still not forgiving him for the worst acting performance in GI Joe, a movie not known for stellar acting performances. --------I don’t feel disappointed in having gone to see this movie. In fact it was in fact very entertaining. I enjoyed Terminator the first time, so I really enjoyed watching it a second time. This time with cool metallic angel wings. --------One last thing about Legion. I thought it was really cool that the name of the podunk diner in the middle of nowhere was called Paradise Falls. Paradise Falls is the name of a slaver encampment in Fallout 3. In fact it was the location that I picked up my first Chinese Officers Sword. I sure enjoyed killing all those slavers. I just thought you should know. --------Being as busy as I have been I have not had a chance to read any comic books since my last column. It is killing me to have a stack of unread comic books here that I cant read. I got all kinds of Ultimates, some Dark Wolverines and some Sinister Spider-Man issues over here just dieing to be read by me. Not to mention that I have finally consolidated my east and west coast comic book collections. So hopefully next week I will get to review some of that material. I wonder if the Hulk is back yet. |
