2/8/10

I am starting to catch up on my pile of comic books at the comic book store. There seem to be big things afoot in the Marvel Universe. Some of it will no doubt be hype, but there will likely be nuggets of awesomeness for those that shell out enough to find them. At $3.99 a comic every book should be awesome. Unfortunately that is not the case. I am going to start out with the Captain America Reborn mini series. This one is a little old, however it took me a while to get to it. When Marvel killed off Captain America we all knew they would bring him back. It was never a question. The only true questions were when and how. Well the when was two and a half years later. The how is the part that I find to be lame. There were so many different ways to bring Steve Rogers back. My personal favorite, and forgive me for repeating myself, was to keep the Invaders era Captain America at the end of the Avengers/Invaders mini series. Sure it would have caused some temporal shenanigans, but hey that is fertile grounds for exploration. It would be an awesome reboot of the character.

Think about it Captain America came back into the Marvel Universe in 1964. Forty-six years ago! He spent more of his life in modern times than he ever did in WW2. He has way more history in the here and now. The current Captain America Character is too far away from the man out of his time roots. He has been in the modern world for more years than I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to get back to that aspect of the character? On top of that he would have all these enemies and friends that he has never even met. So much hilarity could ensue.

Instead Marvel decides to go with time machine bullets. What the hell kind of crap is that? And to top it off there is special time tracking nanites in Sharon Carters blood stream so that only she is the key to bringing him back. Yawn! I call plot device fail! Ok lets say I am Marvel Comics and I am to invested in the Captain America continuity to throw it out the window on a hunch that it would be cool to bring back a WW2 era Steve Rogers. I still can’t help but think there would be a cooler way to bring him back than time machine bullets.

Next up is The Fall of the Hulks. I think I am up to date on the storyline, and you know me I love the Hulk action. There has been a good amount of action so far. There is still no green Hulk though, however you know he is coming. I guess my big complaint is one that I have of a lot of Marvel storylines. The Bad Guys in this one are going by the name of the Intelligencia. Their goal is to kill the eight smartest people in the Marvel Universe. Their first targets are Reed Richards and Doctor Doom. So my complaint is this. How am I to get invested in a storyline that is going nowhere? Marvel is not going to kill off Reed Richards or Doctor Doom. I will of course read it. I am sure it will be a lot of fun. There better be a lot of Smashing. This is the same problem I had with World War Hulk. Did anyone Ever for a second think that the Hulk was actually going to kill Doctor Strange, Reed Richards, Tony Stark or Namor? Maybe they would have let him take out Blackbolt, but they didn’t. World War Hulk was cool in the fact that it had lots of Hulk Smash. Of course it did lack The Hulk-Sword action I was hoping to see. Who knows, they have been showing Hulk-Sword hints so perhaps when they finally get around to bringing the hulk back we will see some of that.

I am almost caught up on The Siege storyline as well. I think The Siege number two came out already and I have not picked that up yet. I was definitely more excited about The Fall of The Hulks than I was about The Siege. However after getting into both mega crossover events I find that The Siege is the one that seems to intrigue me more. The premise is definitely more epic. This could be the conclusion of the Dark Reign era. Marvel is touting this as the story seven years in the making, so who knows? Norman Osborn cannot stay on top forever. I wouldn’t mind if he did, I think the whole concept is super-awesome. I like having a Dark Avengers and a Dark X-Men. It will not last forever and who knows, this could be the beginning of the end. Osborn did tell his Avengers that if they help him with this that they no longer have to serve him. The premise is Osborn, his Dark Avengers and all the Avengers Initiative versus The Asgardians. I am sure the good guys will rally with the Asgardians making this a super throw-down. The Siege number one ends with Thor receiving a royal beat down from the Dark Avengers on live TV. The way they handled it like it was breaking news was an excellent use of the comic book medium. This really has me wanting to see how this all plays out. Another really good image is the frame that shows how many Avengers are part of the Initiative. I have never really read the initiative, however it looks like there are an army of them. It should be a good read.

This week I was finally able to catch up on Heroes, and I have to say I am impressed with the improvements the show has made this season. Things are coming to a head nicely. Last weeks episode seemed to focus on HRG’s back story. Now HRG is not my favorite character, but he is definitely not my least favorite character either. The back-story part of this ep was fun though. Seeing a young Noah as a car salesman, although not a very good one. He had a pregnant wife and all was just lovey dovey bliss, until an evil telekinetic shows up and kills his wife. Why is it when they kill pregnant women on TV or movies it is almost always with a spike through the belly? Well that is what fuels his hatred of specials. As an added treat we get to see Noah’s first string-wall. What is it with string-walls? Does it really help to have a bunch of strings stretched across a map? The Heroes creators seem to think it’s the only way to organize data I guess.

We also got a Peter/Sylar story-line this week, and I thought it was a pretty cool one to. Sure we have been down the Sylar as a good guy story-line before. Sylar is my favorite character on Heroes. He is probably most everybody’s favorite character. So it is natural for them to try and make him a good guy. I tell you what. There is a small part of me that would like to see Sylar as a good guy. However that would not be Sylar, and it would probably come across as forced and cheesy. So I applaud their efforts to make him toe the line. It was a winning formula on Deep Space Nine with Gul Dukat. I am still of the opinion that Gul Dukat is the single greatest television bad guy of all time. The highs and the lows, the sheer villainy at the end all came together in the perfect storm of asshole. If you have not seen the full run of Deep Space Nine yet do yourself a favor and Netflix it. It is the greatest Star Trek series to date. Sure the first season is a little weak, but boy does it pick up.

One thing is for sure. Heroes is Ramping up. Both storylines ended with a cliffhanger and it looks like things are headed towards a big confrontation. Now of course NBC is going to drag it out as long as they can. Sure it looks like things are going down next week, but we all know how they love to drag it out.

Lost started its final Season last Tuesday. I can’t recall if I have written about Lost in this column before. Lost is one of my favorite shows. I cannot get enough of it. Those of you who watch Lost have probably already seen the episode and those of you who don’t are not going to have any idea as to what I am referring to if I were to review it. Usually when a show that I love announces it’s final season I get a little sad. This time however it is different. This time I am actually eager for the series to conclude. Sure twenty seasons of Lost would be great on some levels. But you know there is that one awesome reveal that they are holding onto for the final episode, and I simply do not want to wait for it. As for the new season, I like the format. The heads are all back at the same space/time on the island, meanwhile the flashbacks seem to be going to an alternate timeline where Oceanic flight 815 actually landed in Los Angeles. I suspect that our beloved cast of characters lives will intertwine as that alternate reality is explored throughout the season. But who can say? I have been wrong before.
