John Berry 3/17/10 --------Last night I had the opportunity to take my girlfriend out to see a sneak preview of Repo Men. Props to CJ’s comics in Fort Lauderdale for providing the tickets. This is one of the movies I have been waiting to see. I was not as excited about this as I am about Kick Ass or Iron Man 2, but I was looking forward to it. --------Near future science fiction can be some of the most thought provoking science fiction. Near future science fiction addresses how things might be in our lifetime. I really enjoy this genre of science fiction. Movies like Gattaca and The Sixth Day fall into this category. These movies can get you thinking. I still to this day think about the refrigerator from The Sixth Day. I want a refrigerator that tells me when I am running low on milk and then orders it for me after verbal conformation. I don’t much care for milk, but it would be nice to have the help keeping me stocked up on beer. It would be more than nice it would be awesome. --------So what does Repo Men tell us about how the near future may look? Well for starters in the near future children will still be eating Fruit Loops for breakfast. In fact the Fruit Loop box doesn’t seem to change one bit. Apparently there will be no breakthroughs in breakfast cereals or breakfast cereal packaging. In the near future you will still have to drive your own car. That one kind of sucks. I was hoping they would work on that one. Sure I like driving, but I also like getting drunk at bars and I am sure I would love a car that would drive me home afterwards. In the near future the cities are going to be all skyscrapers, lights and flat screen electronic billboards. Nothing new there I suppose. In the near future collars on leather jackets will be about twice as tall as they are now. I don’t really understand that one, however that is how this movie is telling us it is going to be. And in the near future you will be able to get just about any body part replaced with a cybernetic prosthesis, however if you lapse in payment for 96 days. The Union will send a goon after you to cut out the device and leave you twitching and bleeding on the floor. I guess your civil rights are going to take a big hit in the near future. --------I enjoyed Repo Men. I found it to be visually stimulating and well written. Some of the plot twists were a little easy to guess however that seems to be more and more common the more movies I see. There truly is nothing new under the sun, and this movie is no exception. I would say the acting was quite competent. Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Liev Schreiber all give good performances. In fact This movie actually finds a way to make Jude Law look like a bad-ass. --------Repo Men is a flashy buddy film with a healthy dose of one-liners thrown in. There is plenty of action and blood. I can't think of a point in the film that I was bored during. Would I recommend seeing it? Sure why not? I had a good time.
