John Berry 10-2-09 ---------It was the fall of 1983 just after what I call the summer of punk. I had spent the summer in Panarama City California with my dad. It was there that I was first introduced to the punk rock music. It was during my five-year exile to Ketchum Idaho. Some would call it paradise, but they weren’t 13-year-old city boys. Anyways I was in constant communication with the lady who worked at the record store. She didn’t really have any punk tapes but it was OK because I didn’t really have any money. One time when I was in there she told me that she had this cool new punk tape called The Psychedelic Furs. I thought about buying it, however the cover of the cassette tape didn’t look very punk. So I passed on it. Back then a tape cost ten bucks and that was a big chunk of change, especially when you couldn’t just go to Youtube and hear what the band sounded like. A couple years later I finally heard their music and confirmed that I had made the right decision. It was cool enough I guess. But it wasn’t punk and it wasn’t me. ---------So last Tuesday night the Furs played here in Fort Lauderdale and I tell you what. It was a fun show. Now I had never really been into The Psychedelic Furs. If you had asked me about any of there songs the only one I would have been able to tell you about was Pretty in Pink. Once they started up I found that there were many songs that I recalled. Now I am never going to be a huge Psychedelic Furs fan. But I gotta say they put on a good show. That Richard Butler fellow is quite a showman. Of course the Rum and cokes cost more than the cassette I couldn’t afford in the eighties. I wonder if I will see the $25 rum and coke in my lifetime. ---------Heroes season 4 episode 2 aired on Monday. Of course I was watching Monday Night Football as every red-blooded American should be doing. I did Tivo it. Bad news is that that was the TV show that my Tivo decided to take a crap on. Did you know that Comcast charges ninety-nine cents to watch an episode of Heroes on Demand? What a gyp. Anyways it doesn’t matter I can watch it on the NBC website for free, and I did. So far so good, of course I coulda used a little more action. But watcha gonna do? Let me start with this. It is so fuckin obvious that Claire’s roommate has a power. I could be wrong but I’m betting the SWF has secrets of the super persuasion. The Parkman storyline is getting interesting. Of course that is because it’s the Sylar storyline. Poor little weak-sauce Matt Parkman. Too weak to use his powers and to weak to not use his powers, and now he is getting his brain cornholed by Sylar. That part was pretty cool. The Irish sounding carnie Ink dude is starting to develop into a cool character. They did a good job of building up sympathy for the character and then taking it away at the end. ---------Another awesome show that is back is Fringe. I love this show. Last season ended with a bang and I have been waiting all summer to see where it picked up. So far I have only seen episode two. I missed one and thought two was one so there was a little confusion on my end. By next week I will catch up on all episodes. Now I gotta say I am a little disappointed with where they are going so far this season. Now don’t get me wrong scorpion/mole boy was cool and it was a good ep. Apparently however Olivia seems to have amnesia from her car accident. So she doesn’t remember going to an alternate earth and she doesn’t remember meeting Spock. So now they are dragging it out. Jump right in and deliver I say. Anyways I will catch up on this one and maybe re-watch the season finale by next week. ---------I just got back from catching a matinee showing of Zombieland. This one is a fun ride, a good mix of gore and gags. Woody Harrelson doesn’t really branch out his wings as an actor very much however he is funny. My take on this movie is that it is a buddy flick. You got your unlikely duo, you got your laughs, and of course our young hero gets the girl at the end of the movie. Just like every other Hollywood movie. There were a couple cool things of note. They showed a nice pair of zombie tits during the opening sequence. When they got to Hollywood there’s a cool scene where they show some of those Hollywood personalities that hang out in front of the Chinese Theater all zombied out. Charlie Chaplin and Jack sparrow are among them. And then there is the BM. I’m not gonna spoil that one for you. ---------This week my main comic book focus has been seeking out cool online comic book websites and trying to trade links with them. I have sent out about forty emails and gotten two link responses, a couple rejections and a couple invites to join online comic book forums. What I have seen is some pretty cool stuff out there. If you are jonesing for a comic book fix yet don’t want to spend the money there are plenty of options out there. I’m looking for you so you don’t have to. However if they don’t want to share the link love then I’m probably not going to talk about it here, at least not at present. But there is nothing to stop you from going out and finding all the cool stuff that’s out there. If you find something really cool let me know about it. ---------One thing I couldn’t pass up this week was the conclusion to Old Man Logan. I have been waiting for this one. I gotta say, it was worth the wait. Everyone loves a good Wolverine Hulk throw-down. This has Hulk fodder and a main boss-fight. The art is top notch. This is one time that a comic is worth the 4.99 cover. Lots of action and then some really cool pin-ups to round it out. This is, in my humble opinion, uncharacteristically cool of Marvel to not cheese this out. Because lets face it, Marvel loves to cheese it out. I cant tell you how pissed I am to see more and more titles being raised to the 3.99 price. My guy at the comic book shop says by the end of the year all Marvel titles will be 3.99. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
